The month of May is not a good time to visit. The snow has gone but summer is not here yet. In this twilight zone between winter and summer it is just one of many tourist towns that is instantly forgettable. We regret we didn’t stay just across the border in Martigny which has so much culture that is completely lacking in Chamonix. The only visitors to this town seemed to be bucket-price tour groups from the far east.

I am slightly disabled in that my mobility is restricted by arthritis. Chamonix is a beautiful town in itself but it can be difficult to get around at night.I wanted to check out the live music scene but had real difficulty with transport.Although it is free,or cheap all day it is nearly impossible to get a taxi (unless I have been calling the wrong numbers!).I was told by some locals that they are tied up doing airport runs, how true this is I don't know. I think if you have similar problems then book a long time ahead or online.Otherwise the place is brilliant you have breathtaking views of the high mountains above, alpine meadows and a town that wants for nothing. It is easy to visit Les houches Argentiere and all the beautiful ski areas, even if you can't ski there are mountain railways and cable cars. Expensive but well with it. It is becoming my second home now.

A many time visitor, easy to get about on buses or train and some of the best off-piste there is anywhere. Looking forward to the re-opening of the top cable car so the biggest / best runs will be accessible once again. CMD make sure you don't go down the road Vial and Alterra have taken (selling season passes and driving up day tickets to drive sales of these products and thus maxing out their profits) - On vous voyons!!

Skiing in Chamonix is extreemly snow dependant.
Skiing in Chamonix is extreemly snow dependant. Should you be lucky enough to have several days of powder, each of the individual resourts are more than large enough with loads of off-piste opportunites to ski.
However, as this is a season with limitid snow conditions, each individual resourt becomes too small, with too many people on the piste, as there is too litle snow in the terrain. As such, I would much rather recommend the surronding resorts such as Courmayeur or Verbier for a weeks stay, as you then get away from the dayly transport with busses etc.
The need to tranfere between the different resorts to ski by buss is also a negative aspect, as it is pure madness with everyone trying to get on the first bus that comes. I would definitely not recommend Chamonix for families based on this, as younger children would strugle with the stampede....
As a town Chamonix has a lot to offer, with good shops and resturants, but as a ski destination, I will probably not return, but head off to larger interconnected resorts.

The Chamonix valley provides some of the most amazing alpine scenery anywhere. The mountains are stunning and the opportunities for ski and snowboard adventures in winter are endless. That said, this is not the best choice for beginners or early intermediate skiers or boarders. The majority of the terrain is challenging. Also, be prepared to take the free ski bus up and down the valley to experience all that Chamonix has to offer. The main town has an abundance of great restaurants, bars and shops, but consider staying in one of the quieter villages along the valley if you want to avoid the crowds in peak season.

It’s a really impressive town but lacks the charm of an alpine resort such as Avoriaz or Morzine. Logistics are incredibly troublesome getting to a from slopes. We had to really on bus service which is unreliable, overcrowded and insufficient.
It’s definitely not somewhere to take young kids. It really has an adult feel about the place

Staff are always very friendly and helpful. The location is fantastic, the pool is a win in the summer with a great view too. Nice area to relax next to the river after a long day in the mountains and it is always clean. We had a late transfer to the airport and was able take a shower in the downstairs bathroom after a sweaty day in the mountains (and they provided towels) which was incredible and greatly appreciated. I have stayed here before and will again, it is generally one of the first hotels I look at when going to Chamonix.
-The location is great and convenient. I like that I can walk anywhere nearby for food and the supermarket is just right down from the hotel.
- The room was spotlessly clean when we entered and the housekeeper was also nice when we met her.
- The towers are clean and crisp and I like to have them like that and not many hotels manage to do it. In the room also have a nice coffee from Nespresso.
- the breakfast was great with many options and good quality products.
This property suited us perfectly. A small but old ski lodge, very clean with double bed, kitchen and lounge. It was so close to teh centre of Chamonix, the train station and bus station. All this with a View of Mont Blanc out window. We loved it. We from Australia are hiking in France and Italy, and while it was not a five star modern hotel, it was five star with facilities and convenience. Our Host Elana gave us perfect directions to get there.
Our room was very comfortable and clean with amazing views of the mountains! The hotel is located just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Chamonix with its many shops and restaurants and access to the Aiguille du Midi. The hotel has great facilities and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Some parking is available at the hotel or at a public car park just a couple of minutes’ walk down the hill.
Beautiful hotel --walking distance to everything in the village. Facilities were updated, modern-- brilliant refurbishing- incorporating the old with the new. Views from the room right out to the lifts and mountains. Bathroom was updated and modern --fantastic shower - Service from all the staff was A+! Walking distance to everything in the village.
We loved the convenient location close to town center and multiple bus lines, our spacious room and the warm hospitality of the hotel’s staff. An added bonus was the spectacular view from our room which really was unbeatable! Everyone at La Sapinière went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. We’ll definitely be back!
This is much better than most hotels in Chamonix. Location is fantastic, much better than we expected. it is a big hotel, meaning now and then the reception is stuffed with Chinese tourists, came on a bus, waiting for their room, but all in all, you still feel welcome and a part of Chamonix while you are there.
It is located in 5-10 minutes from Chamonix. It has bus stop nearby which can ride you to the most popular ski resorts. Hotel owns free private parking, which is good, because in Chamonix all the parkings are paid. Breakfast is nice, views are ok - not the best you can see there
the hotel was in the perfect location, staff were exceptional and facilities were amazing - we have always stayed in apartments when visiting Chamonix but would 100% recommend this hotel for a fuss free luxury stay at a reasonable price
Location! Right at the Chamonix train station and one of the main lively streets. The hotel itself has a taste of France. Great breakfast sitting on the street. The main street with all the shops and restaurants just outside the door.
The staff is lovely, the breakfast offers all you need, the location of hotel is ideal, enough parking slots available and special is always the coffee/tea time with homemade cakes in afternoon … best location in Chamonix valley!
Central location close to restaurants, train and bus. Very cozy and we'll equipped room keeping the charm of the classic hotel with updated facilities like bathrooms, etc.
Great value for a solo traveler.
BBQ outside, very close to Chamonix center, free parking, cheaper price in Chamonix especially for high season, free breakfasts and storage room, sauna and small terrace. Quite area.
Perfectly located hotel in a more quiet but still lively and good connected area of Chamonix. The layout of the appartment was great allowing maximum comfort.
