Great location with easy links to explore the whole island from a quiet base. Loads of walking trails and history on your doorstep. Easy bus and MER links. About 4 miles from Snaefell. Friendly and helpful locals willing to help if they can. Must see the Great Laxey Wheel. We thought it was fantastic. Stayed on the IOM for 4 days and used the clean, frequent and punctual buses to get around.

During our stay we visited all areas of the island, only spending an afternoon in Laxey itself. The wheel was worth visiting, particularly since English National Trust members get free entry. Some parts of Laxey looked a bit run-down, with properties boarded up, and others requiring significant maintenance. We bought a Go Explore ticket for the day, giving us access to all public transport (electric trams including the Snaefell railway, buses, steam trains and even the horse drawn tram in Douglas). This is well worth buying for a car-free day.
We walked up Snaefell, and were lucky to have a clear day to see the "seven kingdoms".

Great little town with a lovely rocky beach with two great choices for ice cream, sandwiches, coffee, etc. It was the perfect location from which to base ourselves so that we could visit many other villages on the island. Douglas, Port St.Mary, Port Erin and Peel all had their charm, incredible history, ancient castles plus great hiking trails up hills and along coastal paths. Plus, we took all three of the trains, the Snaefell Mountain train, the Isle of Man Steam railway from Port Erin to Douglas, and the Manx Electric train from Laxey to Douglas and back. We’ll visit again…one day.

Laxey a small village but peaceful with beach and the wheel however the wheel is undergoing some restoration work at present. Laxey has a few hills which may prove difficult for people with mobility problems but a nice little harbour area and a nice Italian restaurant and take away restaurant too.

Laxey is about the Wheel, but so much more.
Laxey is about the Wheel, but so much more. Old Laxey has a lovely beach with good café. The station allows travel on the electric railway and up Snaefell on the mountain railway. Summit restaurant was good - but the views are excellent. Take your wind-proof gear because it does blow, but it's well-worth the visit.

Fantastic beach and promenade.
Fantastic beach and promenade. Good selection of pubs and eating places. Lovely friendly and helpful people. The Shore Inn does a spectacular steak night with locally sourced quality steak at great value price. Cooked to (our) perfection.
