Darwin displays a cocktail of cultures from ‘Aussie larrikins’ to the local Aboriginals from Larrakia Country. Throw in an influx of international visitors who now call the Top End of Australia home, and this concoction bedazzles with busy outdoor markets and an adequate supply of drinking holes (pubs).
The modern Darwin Wharf precinct, including Stokes Hill Wharf, still gleams on those endless summer days having been rebuilt after the destruction caused both during World War II bombings and Cyclone Tracey. Grab a bar stool with a view of the harbour or a seat on a terrace and sip a cool drink in Australia’s northernmost, tropical capital city.
A popular time for tourists is Darwin’s dry season that starts in May and ends in October. If you prefer it hot and humid, then the end of the wet season can be spectacular when the waterfalls in Kakadu and Litchfield national parks are at their mightiest.
Australia’s wild frontier can be reached all the way from Adelaide and Alice Springs along the picturesque Stuart Highway that ends at Daly Street in the CBD. Outside the centre are the natural surrounds in Palmerston, Humpty Doo and closer by is Mindil Beach with its famous Sunset Market.
Darwin International Airport has international flights from Singapore and Bali. You can choose from a variety of hotels, hostels and apartments on Booking.com.
Darwin winter we found very humid, the heat was expected.
Darwin winter we found very humid, the heat was expected. City is vibrant with good food outlets, but not a lot catering to Ceoliacs.
Street parking, be aware it is all timed meters.
Mindil sunset markets are a must go to. Lots of street foods at reasonable prices.
Wave pool on waterfront was fun, and reasonably priced.

Darwin has a vibe, full of lovely cafes and nightspots and a very interesting history from World War 2 and Cyclone Tracy. The Waterfront area is beautiful, lovely well maintained parks and fabulous markets. Evenings, everyone comes out to see the spectacular sunsets over the water. Evenings are warm - people go out walking, outdoor exercise classes and pop up eateries galore. Gateway also to Litchfield, Katherine and Kakadu - what's not to love!

It was wet season but that made it more pleasant as it kept things a little cooler and less crowded. I would definitely go in the wet season again. I loved the lush tropical feel and smell of the foliage. The scenery was amazing and the fact it is a small city made it easy to walk and use E scooters. Plenty of picturesque foliage and water scenes. Shopping also convenient with major supermarket open until late.
Must visit us Aquascene to feed the fish at high tide. Check website for opening times as they change depending on tides.
Monsoons is nice for food on the main street.
On Litchfield st is Tim's Surf and Turf. Great food, kids treated well, lots of families and Tim is a great host.
Get out to Cullen Bay for a chill walk and a few restaurants.
The wharf area and waterfront definitely worth a visit and only short walk from main street. Catch a free shuttle which will take you around the wharf area and waterfront to save your legs.

Double check everything and insist if it doesn't match what you have booked that they double check everything. My last day was a bitter disappointment due to a stuff-up on the tour providers side. Other than that Darwin is lovely. Parap markets-great. Wildlife park-excellent.
Lovely hotel, when in Darwin, make sure to stay at least a couple of nights here, it is truly worth the money. We stayed in four different hotels in Darwin and this one was by far the best. One of the best lagoon pools in Australia, feels truly like a holiday. Walking distance to Botanical gardens, next to Mindil markets, rooms spacious and well appointed. Good mix of guests from all ages.$10 taxi fare to Darwin city or take the affordable easy to ride Neuron scooters. Quick checkout.
-very comfortable room , wil go for Rydges again.
-free hotel laundromat
-easy drive from here into Darwin and Litchfield National park.
- compliments for the cleaners the room was very clean
-Dark curtains , comfortable bed.
-fresh integrated professional Aircon (room temp adjustable to your needs) (no cheap split units).
-overall look of hotel very good and well maintained, all facilities that u could need are available within the hotel.
We left very early in the morning so did not have the breakfast, however we had room service dinner the previous night and it was delicious. It was so wonderful to be able to stay at a hotel that actually still has room service 24hrs and a restaurant. I normally book accommodation in Darwin city but the places no longer have room service and many have closed their restaurants. I won't be staying in the city again!
Why would you stat in a hotel room when you can have a beautiful, self contained, fully serviced apartment for about the same daily rate. A full size fridge, cooking facilities, air conditioning, it's as good, no it was better than living at home. Absolutely magic, will definitely stay here again in the future.
Relatively cheaper accommodation compared to other CBD hotels in Darwin. It's walking distance to Parap Market and close to the airport. Only 5 minutes drive to Mindil Market. The room is good size for 1 QB and 1 SB. Typical old school motel. Good value for money. Will stay here again if we visit Darwin again.
The one bedroom fully self contained apartment with washer, dryer, full size fridge was very spacious and had a great view of marina and surrounding bay. The apartment was very clean and ideal for our 4 night stay. 5 minute walk to Restaurants and only 10 minute drive into Darwin city or Waterfront.
Late night shuttle pick up at airport and a lift back to the airport the next day to pick up a hire car. While the big hotels are adjacent to the airport there are road works going on around them so walking there at midnight would not be fun.
The hotel was close to the city and the waterfront.
The staff were accomodating. I originally requested to have one of the bed split to singles. This hadn’t been done when we arrived but was completed quickly after I asked again.
Darwin city hotel was very good, it was booking.com that was bad and left out all sorts of information regarding the room and stay and free parking included in our booking etc.
The hotel is well positioned close to town and the room was spacious. The facilities were adequate for our short stay. There was plenty of parking, the breakfast was good.
